Assignment 3 – Caitlin Gillman

This assignment was... incredibly frustrating.
Originally, I wanted to do a super elaborate interactive scene where the player is on a farm. I wanted the player to start off in a farm house and be able to walk around in the scene, exploring the various parts of the farm. The player would be able to open gates, jump over fences, witness animals walking around, and interact with the animals, as they either run away from you or come up to you as you approach them. I also wanted to have a bunch of farm sounds that were triggered as you got into the area inhabited by the animals (for example, have horse sounds as you went into the horse area of the farm).
But, unfortunately, a lot of this did not happen. The technical difficulties and problems I encountered while making this scene were immense.
First, I couldn't find half the models I wanted online and I didn't have time to make them myself. I couldn't find many good farm related models, like water troughs, crops, etc., but I added what I could find. Of the models I found, not many of them had animations attached to them. So, originally, I wanted a ton of animals walking around my scene, but now I only have horses because those are the only models with pre-existing animations that I could find.
Second, the models I DID find had a ton of issues, and caused my scene to constantly crash. The crops I downloaded caused the biggest issues, however. I was able to fix that problem by painting the crops onto the terrain, much like we paint the mountains and hills onto a scene.
Third, there were issues with the Playmaker aspect of this project. I tried following the tutorials and make the horses run away when you approach them but, for some reason, it just doesn't want to move. I watched the tutorials several times and had my friend who is really good at Unity try to help me fix the problem, but we still couldn't figure it out. When you click on the model, there's a little window that shows up on the right of the horse actually doing the animation it's supposed to, but it doesn't play in the scene for some reason.... I'm not sure why. I tried it with several of the horses, but I couldn't figure it out. As far as I can tell, the trigger aspect of walking up to it/ walking away works, but for some reason, the animation still doesn't play.
Lastly, I was going to put sounds in my project but I just didn't have the time to do so. Maybe I'll do it for the next project.
I feel like this project would've been so cool if I could figure out my technical difficulties. I would love to go over them at some point and try to figure out what went wrong.
