Linked above is my Unity Project, 2016: A Ben Odyssey based very loosely on the first monolith scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Every step of the process was plagued by janky-ness from an accidental move of the scene folder into the scene folder creating an infinite number of scene folders impossible to delete on my desktop to VLC media player not being able to record my screen leading to the iphone produced masterpiece seen above. So. Much. Googling.
Did I mention that it tried to build a demo real instead of my project.
What did work surprisingly well was my brain not overheating. I do feel like I have a pretty dang good grasp of Unity now though. Importing images and sound was surprisingly easy. Also no issues with importing assets. Once I setup a rational folder system, things became much easier.
Once I get better at these tools I'd like to eventually animate the apes to have them slowly walk forward. It'd be cool if I could get more sounds in the environment and expand the area of the terrain, . If I really wanted to get funky, I'd have the monolith transport the player to a spaceship when the player touches it.
It would be really cool to foreground certain levels of this VR story world with small clips from the movie OR create recreations of those scenes with the other cameras. If I were to use this to talk about an anniversary of the movie or something, there could potentially be some characters who act as film historians to explain certain scenes, like a guided experience of the movie.
In any case I am very excited where this could go.
