Independent Study – Stanlyn (Ye Lu)

I learned a lot this semester, including the basics of Unity and how to combine Unity and Cinema 4D together.

The most impressing part of learning is how to animate the characters in the scene. In class, professor told us to import the Mixamo character and the animation together, so that we can control how the character moves. But I watched the instruction on the assets store so I imported characters from assets store as well as the animation package.

After importing the character package, I saw the different folders in it. Firstly I chose the character I wanted, then I opened the "animation" folder. Once I opened it, I saw different names of how the character moves. I can preview them through the right corner by clicking the "play" button above the model in the corner. Once I make my decision, I will apply this animation to my character by navigate my character into the animation folder, and choose the animation name I want.

When I finish these, I can uncheck "play automatically" or set triggers to the character as I need. I used this method to import more characters and animations into my scene without being limited by the Mixamo choices, which allowed me to create more fancy Unity projects.

Meanwhile, I realized that I can use the same method to control other things in my scene, such as adding various sounds and stuffs to make my scene more real.

Not only the characters or scenes, we can find different stuffs in the asset store. Other than watching instructing videos through Lynda or YouTube, I prefer reading the instructions in words. If the asset store instruction is not clear enough for us to understand, we can also find more information through googling, which can almost provide us with everything, and save us a large amount of time.

If the asset store still can't fulfill my requirement, I would like to create a character myself. Cinema 4D is a good tool for us to accomplish all we want. Even we can adjust the scale and rotation in Unity, I prefer to adjust it well enough when I build my stuff in Cinema 4D. After building my stuff, I will save it as fbx so that I can drag it into unity directly. And since unity cannot recognize very much materials, I will make the material of my stuff as simple as possible, for fear that it show all dark in Unity.
