VR Experience

After class this past Wednesday, I left thinking about how amazing this industry is, and how quickly it will take off. It was only a few months ago that I first discovered VR in the form of Google Cardboard, and just when I thought it could not get more impressive, I got the chance to try an even more immersive VR experience on Wednesday. I was blown away at how quickly you can completely become consumed by the experience. Even the less polished VR can still become something incredible. While this technology is already mind blowing, I cannot wait to see how much it develops over the next few years. It seems like every question I asked about when they would try to incorporate some kind of other technology, the answer was always " They already are". It made me so excited to see where this industry will go and what its content creators will think of next.
- The storytelling techniques that worked the bet for me, was when there was some sort of element which engaged with the with the viewer. The VR experience on the river, where there was a guide who asked which direction you wanted to go, and you got to decide by looking really brought me into the story of it all. The ones where you felt like an isolated being just watching, took me out of the story.
- I felt extremely engaged in most of the experiences, and it was fun to watch others react as well, because alot of people's reactions seemed genuine.
- While VR experiences like the Mario Castle, did not make me feel so physically present and were more of just a fun game, during the Circus experience I found myself looking at the figure next to me sometimes rather than the performers, because he appeared to be talking and I didn't want to be rude and not listen. Then I remembered it was all fake and it was kind of a surreal moment.
- There are many factors that affected the experience, but for me personally, the most important was sound. Something about not being able to hear anything outside, really brought me into the video. The other important factor for me would probably be the quality of the video/ how easily it tracked my movements. When the video was high quality and the motion was seamless, I found myself forgetting that it wasn't real .
Overall, this was incredible, and I am very excited to see what incredible innovations the industry will discover next, and how I can incorporate the technology into my own industry.
