First Experience with Unity! – Vi Nguyen

This was my first time with Unity and it honestly was a crazy creative endeavor. It was surreal to experience first hand the world that I literally created. You are in control of every aspect of this world. From the very first perspective to the very single mountain range peak, it is literally your playground.
As an individual who is not familiar with first person gaming, this was an awesome experience to go about this world. I could see the potential that Unity has to offer to those who are more in tune and experienced with gaming.
The world I created was purely simplicity. I wanted a Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time kind of feeling. It was honestly my favorite game growing up in the late 90s. One of my favorite experiences in that game was riding around on the horse in the main field. Going off of that, I wanted to create a similar scene in Unity.
The first thing I was very keen on adding into my world was the sky box. I searched for over an hour to find a sky that I had imagined in my head. I wanted a beautiful sky that would be fitting for the overall environment of the world that I created.
It took me a while but I wanted the viewer to come (or fall) into the world and see the obvious first objective they must do; ride the horse. I downloaded an animated horse from the Unity Asset Store, placed it into the scene, and hoped for the best. I played around with all the aspects of the horse but I was not able to figure out how to animate it nor give it detail. Whenever placing the horse into the scene, the horse turned purple and did not show any animation.
I would want the experience or object of the game to be for the player to ride on the horse as they discover this newly created world.
It was not visible but I added a cabin/farm house into the scene directly behind the horse. I downloaded the asset from the Unity asset store and placed it into the scene. However, whenever I would go into play mode, the cabin/farm house disappeared from the scene. I tried to play around with all of the options and settings, tried to delete it and then placed it back into the scene and it would still not appear during the play mode.
What worked smoothly was when I played a water well next to cabin/farm house. The one thing that I was very particular on was the very first thing I wanted the view to experience whenever they enter into the world. I wanted them to fall into to instead of just appearing. I would have never thought twice about this if I didn’t created this world. It was tedious but I got the first person camera/perspective to fall right in front of the horse.
Overall, my very first experience with Unity was swell. I was one of the luckier individuals where things went smoothly. I wanted to keep the world as simple as possible without taking away from the overall feel of the user experience.
