Working with 3D sound caused me a ton of frustration in the beginning. However, after discovering the root of my problems (the default camera) it became a breeze.
For my scene I had created a soccer shootout. As you approach the soccer ball in the distance, the sounds of a roaring stadium gets louder and louder and a group of crazy mixamo fans becomes visible. Once you reach the ball it heads towards goal and once it enters, the crowd (another sound) goes wild.
The only issue I had besides the sound was with playmaker. I could not seem to figure out how to have another object trigger a different object's collider. Nevertheless, the way I had set it up in the end gets the job done.
