For the 3D Scan assignment I decided I wanted to scan myself instead of an object, but first I needed to figure out what I wanted my scene to be. I know the assignment was to add yourself into a scene representing what you did over the summer, but I was taking classes all summer and incredibly bored - boring topic = boring project. I came to the conclusion that if I really wanted to represent myself this summer, I could create a scene that represented my day dream (being on the beach) that I had during every class.
When making my scan (thanks Josh for the help) I wanted to pose myself in a way that would add to the story of the scene, not just have myself as an ornament within it. I thought it would be funny to have myself kind of out to sea and drowning similar to what I was doing with all of my classwork. I ended up scanning myself with my hands in the air - like I really needed help. The scan itself was kind of difficult to do. The scanner was very temperamental about distance and the speed at which Josh walked around me. The final scan, though funny, was blurry on the hands and it was clear that some of the polygons didn't scan as well as others and I have some zombie spots.
My final scene I was actually really happy with. I managed to make it look like a deserted island, with myself in the water all very descriptive of where I was at mentally in class over the summer. My next step after finishing my scene was to create a WebGL format.
Creating the WebGL was actually quite a challenge for me. I exported the assignment and uploaded to the class FTP, but no matter how many times I tried to open it, I kept getting the same error - not enough memory space to load the page. At first I thought it was a problem with my browser, but after an hour or so going through Unity forums I found out that what I needed to do was change the available memory in the export settings. Essentially, I had to go into the player settings on my WebGL export and boost the memory from 256MB to 500MB. The next time I exported, it went up on the site and worked fine.
This assignment all together I was really happy with. Except for my less than perfect scan, I actually really loved my final product.
