Assignment 5

Assignment 5

1.What worked

I think the thing that worked most was the kinds of texturing I did. The jagged edges I thought really worked well to help create the badlands feel that I wanted. The scenario I was trying to depict was that of a long range hiker in the badlands who stumbles onto ruins and strange creatures therein. Although the creatures roar in the beginning, luring the hiker to their site, when he reaches them they are standing quietly facing an angel statue. I wound up using the default skybox (after trying a number of options) because the cool ones all took place at night and an experienced hiker (without a light source) wouldn't be traveling that way.

2. What I'd like to work in an Ideal world.

So much. It kills me that there are no good free torch assets on the Unity store because I feel like the scenario would have been so much better if the viewer could discover the creatures at night. In the future Id like to learn how to attach objects (like a torch) to the FPS controller . I think by doing something like this I could make the immersion greater (especially for something like the vive). Also something that would be cool to learn would be to learn how to animate the monsters. If I wanted to change the scenario I could make the monsters move and chase the player, or make them bow to the statue to give the impression they worship it. The one thing that didn't work and that I couldn't figure out how to work was the roaring sound of the monsters. Although I heard it during play mode it didn't register when I made the scenario outside of Unity. Whether this is a problem with the asset or a user error (most likely the latter) I'm not sure.

In my ideal version of the scene the player, at night stumbles onto the idol first and disturbs it. A sound effect, like sliding stone can be heard and the monsters begin to roar and chase the player. The player then runs until they cross a river and the monsters leave them alone, roaring across the stream for a moment and then loping back to their statue. However, there's a lot of small moving parts to this and after a lot of game breaking errors in the beginning I'm happy with how the story turned out, even if it is rather simple.
