Assignment 2 – Samantha Koenig

After completing this assignment I'm still unsure how I feel about Unity. Getting the hang of the controls was pretty easy and I really enjoyed all the different possibilities with textures. Maybe I enjoyed those most because those were the easiest to control and create with. However, outside of simple tasks, I found the program a lot less intuitive than I would have thought.
The asset store was really interesting to search through and see what others had created, but it seems that unless you're willing to spend some money, the basics are all you're going to get. The experience has only made me more excited for later on when I can use CINEMA 4D to produce my own characters, objects and animations. I did find that with some objects from the store, the creator had left the object and textures detached, which allowed me to do some customization with what my objects ultimately looked like.
Unfortunately, I think some of these more complicated packages I downloaded contained corrupted material and duplication in the coding causing them to not only malfunction, but to crash my entire project quite a few times. Warning to my fellow classmates: these packages can wreak havoc on your other imports.
I will say though, that after conquering the numerous hurdles and learning curve, I actually really enjoyed my experience. I found that the majority of my time was spent waiting for assets to download, searching, and having that lovely rainbow pinwheel spin while I prayed Unity wouldn't crash again. And all in all, I wish that time could have been spent creating more visual interest across the entire terrain, not just where my objects and mountains were centered.
For our future assignments, I think I may try to create more of my own content to import into Unity instead of spending so much time searching for free assets. Fingers crossed my computer skills match my desire to create.
