Assignment 1 – Vi Nguyen

Back in November 2015, Professor Mike Davis shared his New York Times article/Google Cardboard 360 video about The Displaced (http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2015/nytvr/#the_displaced). I went from hearing Skype lecture about VR from the producers of the journalistic piece to experiencing it first hand. I still remember that very moment where I put the Google cardboard on and saw exactly what a little Syrian boy half way across the world saw everyday. That very moment was a turning point for me as a visual journalist.

As a photography graduate student, I have always thought in a 2D, flat liner world. Everything mostly, up until grad school, has been still images after still images after still images. One of my photo professors last semester explained it perfectly—a still photograph is the opening and ending piece and all the parts (photos) in the middle are the multimedia/video of a compilation of the images between the opening and ending photographs.

So that leaves me wondering where does 360 video come into this? Is it the pieces from all dimensions? From above, under, behind, and in front of the viewer? Where does the strong still image come into play? VR is new and exciting and I am honestly giddy to learn as much as I can in this ever changing landscape in visual storytelling.
