Our Idea was simple. Make a 360 video on the sail team in which you could even learn how to sail within the video. We wanted to make out video one that you could enjoy a nice day out sailing on the lake while at the same time you could use the video to teach yourself how to sail properly. Our producer Glen is the captain of the sail team so it made it really easy to set up a day to work with them and allowed us full control of the boats.
When we started to work out how exactly we wanted to set up these 360 shots we knew that for most people whenever they are out on the water they always want to look around and enjoy the area there at. So when we started our video we put your right at the dock where you can over look lake Cazenovia. This way the viewer can be immersed in the setting without needing to focus anywhere. They can time at the start of the video to get used to the new spot they've been placed.
After we set up that shot we then needed to figure out the nest way to film the boats while at the same time have the camera/boat move as little as possible. We were really concerned with the camera moving on the boat because whenever we've experienced where the videos moving but were not we start to experience some motion sickness. They ways we were able to get around that was that we stationed the coaches boat in the middle of the lake with all the sail boats surrounding it. We chose this because the coach boat is flat and has an anchor, this way we can give that camera a leveled surface that didn't move while at the same time taking the viewer out onto the lake and get them excited to start sailing. In addition by having all the sail boats move around the coach boat it gives the viewer complete freedom to look around.
After that we knew we needed shots within the sail boat. However as we watched the team sail the boat would shift around a lot so we needed to figure out the best way to keep it anchor. So we came up with the idea to keep the camera taped to the mast. By having the camera attached to the mast it allows the camera to move with the boat more freely and naturally but at the same time since the mast is at the center of the boat it should be the most stable. In addition to that we also lucked out and one of the members of the team had a go pro arm that are camera fit on that we could stick right to the back of the boat. Once we took all that footage the team felt really good that we captured everything we needed to but we were nervous if it would look this good once we started editing.
Once we got into editing we found that most of our video was really smooth, which we were elated about, and that already, in premier, it looked clean. The editing portion for this product was a little tricky because if the viewer is looking around mid transition they wont start the video were we want it to start. So we needed to make sure we left enough time in each section of the video to look around but at the same time making sure that it wasn't so long that the viewer would get bored.
Overall I'm very happy with this video. The team was a pleasure to work with and we all contributed equally.
