Assignment 1

Assignment 1

My first VR experience was in Shanghai on winter break. I was amazed when I put the headset on and hold the controllers to be totally emerged in the video game.  I am not a fan of video games but video games in VR can really bring me into the scenes and I became more willing to try those games that I swore I would not waste time on because of the sense of participation.

I did not realized VR can be applied at many fields other than entertainment until I took this class. By listening discussion and participating in different kinds of VR, I suddenly realized the prospecting future of VR. In other words, VR is the future. It can be in architecture, education, medicine, traveling, security and so on.

My first VR experience in this class was the Samsung  headset with the dancing scene. I found out the key for VR is "totally emerged", because I did not feel that much special when I was still adjusting my earphones with my headset on ( of course the quality of picture and the whole new way to watch a video were impressive). When I put my earphones on, it was another story and it was the power of sense of participation. I was also amazed by the great details I saw when I turn around, because I thought  developers would choose to neglect the details on the back because audience (at least me) would focus more on the front scenes.

However, the Google Earth headset did not give me surprise probably because I have already experienced diving and sky skying. Google Earth did not surprise me even though it had great pictures and various activities in one scene, because I believe nothing can be compared with the physical experience (unless the technology can enable the headset to trigger nerve cells to get the feelings ). I wish the developers can bring something into VR that can attract people who have already experienced the real situation to experience the same scene in VR and also want to keep doing it in VR. By the way, it would be great if there was a sensor in the headset and could remind me there was a obstacle in front of me.

Then I experienced the "After Solitary" story. It was great to know a story by emerging in it. The only think I did not like was the wire. I would like to walk and turn around to see what was going on but the wire decreased my sense of experience. Also, I feel like a story with more interaction with audience would be more impressive in VR scene. I mean, for me, this story would not make big differences presenting by VR or on a paper. But I still liked it because of the sense of freshness.
