My Personal VR Journey

My Personal VR Journey

Before coming to class I've never tried out the virtual reality before. I've only seen people use it and the games that they play, so I didn't know a lot about virtual reality other than you can transport yourself psychologically into another fantasy world. However after the class where we get to test out all the VR/MR gadgets, I was amazed by the amount unique specs and technology that the VR industry has to offer.

I think the most interesting out of all the VR gadgets that I get to test out was the HTC Vive, which was the first gadget that I get to use. It was an amazing experience, I never realize that I could walk through the virtual space, as I've always though that you have to stand still to avoid knocking things over. The Vive does have a border system that prevents people from hitting walls which help people know if they are running into a wall. There were moments, however, where I thought I could go towards a path only to find out that it was impossible due to the border limitations. While the teleportation system was an amazing addition to the VR experience, I feel that there could be more to it as some sections such as the alcatraz section doesn't allow you to move or teleport out of the cage. The artistic function of the Vive surely caught my attention even though I wasn't able to use it.

The Ocuclus Rift for the Xbox One was interesting but also disappointing at the same time. There a lot of sections where I was immersed into the environment such as the city skyscrapers and the T Rex portion of the game. There were a few times where I reacted even though I didn't know it, which I got to give credit for the developers of that specific section. I know that it is just for the experience, where you can move your head around in order to get a better look at some environments namely the city landscape and the robot section. However the fact that the feature limits you to sitting down and act as a spectator isn't really intriguing as I expects some interaction with the scenes especially when its from Xbox. Overall the Oculus Rift for the Xbox One is boring, so to say.

The Holo Lens by Mircrsoft had me thinking about the next technology for class lectures and studies. After trying out the Holo Lens and experience moving around the galaxy while at the same time able to see where am I going makes me wonder about how this could be the next feature for presentation before the introduction and commercialization of holograms. When I was experiencing the lens I felt that there is a disconnection between me and the rest of the class because I was the only one experiencing it. However since it was mixed reality I feel that the problem could be solved if everyone else is using it at the same. Its like using an actual hologram but with the need of MR glasses. I feel that the future of classrooms might be like this in the future, when this technology becomes commercialized.

After trying out the gadgets I was amazed by out you are able to immerse your self into the world that the developers created and I'm looking forward to learn the techniques that these developers used for their VR and MR experience.
