Final Project_Syracuse City Ballet_Dingyue Zhang&Shumin Lai
Our project is the 360 video of dance performance by Syracuse City Ballet on April 12th. We only had one time opportunity so we borrowed two 360 cameras. However, all six gopros of one camera were all out of battery when we checked the equipment. We had to charge them all as soon as possible.
During the shooting, we tried to get to the stage as close as we could, but the staff didn’t allow us to do so. We tried different angles to get better frames. Another problem is lighting. One spotlight was so bright and made the frame overexposed. Luckily we have filmed rehearsal as a backup.
What bothered us during the editing were transitions. It was hard to put different performances together because the music changed abruptly. We tried to put a gap between them and let the music come out earlier. That works for some transitions but we had to give up some clips to make the whole video flow better.
When we edited the video, we hoped to find a narrator from Syracuse City Ballet to tell us some background stories. We reached the Ballet mistress Stephanie Dattellas three weeks ago. Unfortunately, she was sick last week, so we had to push back the interview date to the date before the deadline. Then, we made a plan B and reached out the Artistic director Kathleen Rathburn. She promised to help us out but it did not work out. We lost contact with them. To make it up, we added some subtitles in the end.
Overall, we learned a lot from this project. We hope to not just tell a story from the video, but offer the audiences the aesthetic of ballet dance.
