Final Project: Parkinson’s Unity Walk
For my final project, I did a 360 degree video of the Parkinson's Unity Walk in Central Park on April 22nd. This walk is an annual event which brings thousands of people to NYC to raise money and awarness for Parkinson's Disease and P.D. research and for the tenth year running the walk raised more than $1 million. For my project, I aimed to not only transport people from wherever they are to Central Park to experience the walk, but also to let them go through the walk with the voices of people who are affected by the disease.
I was able to speak with an expert on P.D. and two people who were diagnosed with P.D. within the last two years. Getting good sound presented the biggest hurdle for me. In order to get clean sound, I ended up using a separate, standard camera and a lavaliere mic. As such, I could not have video of the people speaking in the project, as it would remove the viewer from the immersive nature of it. I just pulled the audio from those interviews and placed it over the video.
The other hurdle I had to overcome was that I had never attempted walking with a 360 camera before. To figure this out, I recorded many videos, at several different speeds, and was able to pick out the ones that looked the best and were the least nauseating in the VR headset. Overall, I am happy with the way that the video came out and am very happy with the skills that I came out of this class with. I think having the knowledge and expereince with 360 degree video will bolster my resume and help me standout when applying for video production jobs.
