Assignment 1 – Vi Nguyen

Back in November 2015, Professor Mike Davis shared his New York Times article/Google Cardboard 360 video about The Displaced (http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2015/nytvr/#the_displaced). I went from hearing Skype lecture about VR from the producers of the journalistic piece to experiencing it first hand. I still remember that very moment where I put the Google cardboard on and saw exactly what a little Syrian boy half way across the world saw everyday. That very moment was a turning point for me as a visual journalist. As a photography graduate student, I have always thought...

Assignment 2: 360 Video Pitch -Bulbul

Summary: The history of a dystopian world where everyone is permanently on their VR devices. Story Arch: We, the camera, watch as each progressive room we enter has more and more people attached to their headsets. In the first room there's discussion among people as they socialize while in the corner there is someone excitedly experimenting with some google cardboard (representing the past). Next there's a room with some groups cluttered around VR devices. The room is more modern looking and the audience hears mumbles like a cafeteria or group meeting. Finally the...

Assignment 2 – Ye Lu (Stanlyn)

I am thinking about making a peaceful scene of a high school playground. We can add trees, avenues, basketball court, and even boys who are playing basketballs. As for the sound, I hope to add bird sounds, the sound of bouncing basketball, with a little bit talking and laughing. And when the user gets closer to the tree, the bird sounds will get loud; when the user gets closer to the basketball court, the ball-bouncing sound will get louder and the bird sound will get weaker, etc. I came up...

Blanchard Assignment 2

Onondaga Lake is an important part of upstate New York, and is constantly in the news-- ways to fix the pollution that seems to be irreversible. I want to create a virtual reality experience around Onondaga Lake, what it is now, what it used to be and what it could be in the future. The outdoor setting (in ideal temperatures) would be a great, controlled space for natural sound and natural light. The subject is the lake and the user experience is lead by framing of each shot. They are...

Abell Assignment Two

I think lots of movement would be a really cool scene if done right. While it is a great experience being in the virtual world inside a room, it is even better when you feel like you are really part of the environment. There is something about the human (or animal) element that really connects with our senses and makes us feel like we are part of the experience -- the empathy machine doing its job. A really cool scene would be either a congregation or someplace very crowded where...

Kaufax: Assignment 1

Late post, but I was finally granted access into the system after WordPress gave me the runaround for a minute since I registered for the class late... Experimenting with all VR technology in the lab was mind blowing for me.  I guess I should preface all this by saying that going into this class, I'd heard things from my friends about Oculus Rift and the HTC 1, Google Cardboard and the ever-changing nature of how we interact with multimedia and tell our stories...but I never really had taken the time...

Assignment 1- MaryMargaret Treinin

I have always been fascinated by Virtual Reality. I think it is due to the fact that one can "escape" the real world, without actually leaving his or her seat. I am pleased that VR and its fans, are growing rapidly. That being said, during the first exercise, I was absolutely excited to try on another head set. Most importantly, I could not wait to experience the VR video that was placed in front of me. As I watched the space adventure that was placed in front of me, once...

Initial Experiences with VR

Last week's class reminded me how far VR has come since Oculus first sent out their developer kits in 2012 (which I was fortunate to demo way back when). To see my peers put on consumer-ready VR hardware (like the GearVR) was surreal. I thoroughly enjoyed watching my classmates' jaws drop and hearing their exclamations.. As someone who considers himself an evangelist for VR, it never ceases to excite me when people have their "aha!" moment with VR and realize that this technology is more than just a cool or...

Assignment 1-Dingyue Zhang

Last Wednesday night, I tried 3D scan, Samsung Gear, Oculus and Google Cardboard on Virtual Reality class. It was really fun to experience something new and I can’t wait to learn more this semester. The device that worked best is Oculus. I picked an air crash scene and what really helped is the sound. The roar of the plane and the people’s screaming were so real that made you feel like being in the scene. Another great part is that you can control the direction of yourself with the keyboard;...
