Assignment 5: Simple Unity Scene

My first shot at making a simple Unity scene went smoother then expected. I was able to follow Professor Pacheco’s YouTube tutorial to do everything except the sound. I ended up making a weird desert scene with a church and some spooky tombstones and a witch caldron. I tried to attach a witch laugh to the caldron but ran into a few problems. I would attach the sound but when I hit play the sound wouldn’t stay in the inspector. I definitely need to review how to add sounds to the scene because I couldn’t find help for it on the tip sheets and my memory is a little foggy on how it actually works. The other issue I encountered you can actually see in my screen cast. My church was half in the ground and I adjusted it multiple times so it sat on top of the sand. However, once I hit play the church moved back to its original position in the ground. I am still not sure why this happened.

I think surreal fantasy scenes would work really well in unity because you obviously can’t capture things that don’t exist with 360 videos. I think scenes that are very large definitely would need some kind of path to follow through the terrain. Following a path could also help with the storytelling aspect because the creator can control the order that the player comes into contact with things. If a game or VR experience revolved around some kind of mystery this would work really well. The creator could place clues around the path and it would be up to the player to find them and figure out what is important. These clues could possibly help the player decide which path to take if the path diverges into separate ways at one point in the scene. I can picture a really pretty mountain scene with paths up and down the terrain.
If I explained on my scene I would add a bunch of spooky or creepy assets to simulate almost what it is like to walk through a haunted house. Someone could walk around my scene and see some scary stuff. I would like to add a story element to it though. Maybe there is a murder or something presented at the beginning of the scene and the player or viewer has to walk around and see if they can figure out where the body is. There could be clues like a murder weapon or a character that talks to you. If there was buildings you could walk into that would be helpful as well. I am not sure how you would do that in unity; I assume you could create another scene of an interior space and link it to the other so that when you walk toward a building it goes to the other scene. This would be less of a storyline like the last idea because there is no clear path but still a cool experience. It would probably be more interesting as well since you could walk wherever you wanted and put the pieces together in any order. I look forward to expanding my unity skills this week.
