Assignment 2: 360 Video Pitch Cameron Spera

For this first project, I want to shoot a Syracuse Dance Team practice that would merge into a performance. The first scene would be in a large open room where the team practices (usually Manley Field House or the Women's Building gym depending on the day). In this scene, there would be multiple subjects far away from the camera. The camera would be placed at an average human height so that the viewers could feel as if they are one of the dancers in the middle of practice. This scene would be using indoor lighting.

In terms of audio, the scene would start with ambient sound just from practice i.e. dancers talking to one another, getting feedback, learning a new routine. The second half of the scene would include music as the dancers begin to practice their routine.

Through this scene, I hope to show people the "behind the scenes" of what being on the dance team is like. Most people just think about all of the performances, but not everything that it takes to bring the routines together. This is especially interesting later on in the project because it would turn into video from a performance, which would give viewers the experience of being on the field during a Syracuse football game. The performances happen in an end zone of the field, where the dancers are surrounded by fans in the stands and other people on the field, such as cheerleaders, camera people, players, and Dome employees. There are only 16 people on the team, so this is not an experience that many people are able to have, which makes it interesting and something people might want to be a part of. It would give a very cool on-field perspective.

The human subjects of this would be the team members and seeing what their experience is like both in practice and on the field during performances. The story moves through their transition from practice to performance, which is a fluid movement. Because the first scene would end with the dancers doing a routine, the second scene (at the performance) would begin right where the first scene ended, picking the dance up right where it left off. The music will help to keep this idea flowing from one scene to the other and will help viewers to understand the change in location.

This project would allow viewers to get an on-field vantage point of a student-athlete, which is something that many people would want to see, but don't have access to. In the grand scheme of things, there aren't that many people who are able to say they've watched a game or performance from on the field and this has the potential to show people just that. It also provides a whole new perspective of the Dome and what it feels like to be watched by upwards of 30,000 people.

To make this effective, the camera will be placed in such a way that the viewer would feel like they are one of the dancers. The experiencer is performing with the team in a way- they are a part of the action. The camera will be stationary, but they will be able to see what the dancers see when they are on the field. The one logistical part is that we would have to position the camera in such a way that it will not be an obstacle for the dancers and so that they will not knock it over while they are performing. The people shooting the video would just seem like onlookers- they would blend in with the people on the field and the other spectators. There is a relatively low safety risk in these scenes, pending we get permission to be on the field during a game/performance.
