Assignment #2: 360 Video Pitch

Assignment #2: 360 Video Pitch

This 360 would explore the "behind the scenes" of the popular Syracuse restaurant Pastabilities. The ultimate product would walk the viewer through different parts of "back end" life of working at this restaurant, following the journey of a server who works at the restaurant. The piece would begin with the view from the service entrance and then travel to the kitchen and then out onto the main floor (near tables) and then at the end of the night, end up back outside.

While the opening scenes in the beginning and end will help provide narrative reference, the more unique parts of the experience will be, I believe, in the kitchen. Industrial kitchens can be complicated, dynamic environments, and the project could break down this environment into mini scenes. The subjects will sometimes be far from the camera, for example, in "survey" roles, where the viewer can look over the kitchen at large. However, there would also be smaller, more focused scenes in which the viewer can get an up close look at chefs doing tasks like making pasta or plating dishes. Ideally, these angles would be static, as the environments will already have a lot going on, and "looking" at different places will be the triggers for movement to new parts of the environment (cued with video techniques like fades).

The height, to accommodate most viewers comfortably, will be at 5'6, so the audience feels as if they are getting to be a part of the Pastabilities crew. The lighting will be mostly indoor, with bits of daylight outside at the beginning of the entire experience (to simulate the beginning of an evening shift) and night outside lighting at the end of the entire experience (to simulate the the end of the shift).

This video would allow people to explore an environment most people cannot go for practical, health/safety, and other reasons. This could give people more of an appreciation for restaurants like Pastabilities (generating some empathy for some of the challenges and/or chaos that service workers can go through), or at least, reveal another side to a popular place. There is not necessarily a set conflict here; it's more exploratory and somewhat more documentary- like as the audience moves through the night, from beginning to end. However, at the time of filming, natural conflict could arrive.

The placement of the rig, i.e. the safety of the rig, will be important. It should be placed in an area that is "in" the action but still a bit pulled back to ensure it won't be tipped over, etc.. The participation and flexibility of the staff here will be key. Possibly, this could be facilitated by a "trainer" server who could help guide the audience through the locations and scenes and act as a physical reminder of the rig's placement.
