Putting ourselves in DPS's shoes, that is my 360 video idea. Officers of DPS, Department of Public Safety, keep order in our community. However, the first thing comes up in my mind encountering DPS is 'am I doing wrong something or not'. Almost every time when seeing them on streets, I am just busy with reminding myself traffic rules. So my idea is about being an officer in virtual reality and understanding the scene better. What will be like to patrol and watch community for public safety?
The Scene:
The first scene I am thinking is the view from front passenger seat of DPS patrol car. Put a recorder in the seat on the height of average point of view of passenger or a partner in this case. It will document the view from officer's eyes while the car is patrolling one of their ordinary routes. The scenery will be wide and moving. To prevent nauseousness, we may choose a route which is nice and easy.
I can imagine several consequential scenes following the first one. There could be a few big or small issues which the officers need to deal with. Upon their agreement, we may be able to record the scenes.
Lighting:
The first scene will be in day light. However, it would be worth to try at night later which can capture the feeling of night patrol.
Audio:
It would probably be most appropriate to try the best to capture the sound of real scene for this kind of documenting. We may ask a few questions to the officer in driver's seat and hear answers, so it is better to be prepared for clear recording of them.
Experience:
Most of us are ones who are taken care of by safety officers. The video will provide the experience of who try to keep things in order. This switch of viewpoint can add another aspect of our ordinary scenery in campus to which of viewers.
Story Discovery:
While virtually going patrolling together with officers, the story of them could be naturally emerging. They can chat about what they went through last winter on this corner of the road, what they had to deal with on that corner of the square, etc. The video will capture such conversations spontaneously as a pair of officers may usually share them on the patrol.
Safety:
Who may dare to steal something form patrolling DPS in Syracuse University?
