Actually, the class on Wednesday evening is not my first VR class, I have been
interested in Virtual Reality technology since Prof. Pacheco introduced it to us in the
Industry Force class last semester. But, I still remember how excited I was the first time
I experienced these VR headsets.
I tried the google cardboard first, seeing the 360 videos downloaded from Youtube.
It was a video of a sea. It felt so real like I was really sitting by the sea, and I can see
people around me. It was awesome.
What storytelling techniques worked well? What didn’t work well?
After trying most of the VR headsets, I like the HTC Vive most. Since first time
experienced it, I’ve been paying attention to this particular headset because I think HTC
Vive is relatively more mature than others.
With 2 multi-function trackpad, I can choose options effortlessly with more 20
sensors on the controllers. Furthermore, there are also 2 wireless base stations provide
motion tracking for better VR experiences. I also like the experience drawing 3D
pictures with these equipments, I’ve never tried this before, it feels magical.
What I think didn’t work well is the skydiving. Because the scene is not that real,
and I didn’t have much freedom to walk or see around the scene.
Did you feel physically present in any of them? Which ones, and what do
you think contributes to that feeling?
I did feel physically present in the Pixar movie, I think the most reason is that it is an
animation movie in a small house. It felt like I was exactly in the house with the little
hedgehog, the balloons flew around the hedgehog and me. And also when I looked
around, I could see furniture behind me. I think the sound also contributes a lot to the
experience.
Did anyone experience nausea? If so, what might have triggered it?
Yes. I felt little nausea when I tried to look around the virtual world. I guess it might
because I moved my head too quickly while wearing a headset.
Did you ever get a sense of uncannyness in a scene, as if you were in a
comic strip?
Yes, I lost my mind in the Pixar lovely short movie.
How does the following affect the experience?
I think the screen resolution is vital, it can directly affect player’s experience. The sound is
also important because hearing sense is one of the five senses and it can provide
authenticity. If the head tracking isn’t smooth, players would feel uncomfortable and
hard to control the equipment. As for wired versus wireless, wireless is better without
the doubt, for the reason that the wire could affect players and it’s inconvenient. The better
quality of 3D graphics the better experience players would get because VR is a
technology to combine virtual and reality world. The full spherical range of vision is also
crucial. VR aims to let players feel like in the real world, so it has to create a scene of
360.
