360 Video Pitch

I have an idea of the narrative I want to tell, but not how it will fully play out yet. However, this one scene will set the tone for the video. The scene would be a house party, with the first scene being in a large living room. The subjects will be relatively close to the camera, with some movement occurring nearby, such as dancing, talking or drinking games. For the opening scene the camera will be at a sitting level, as it is toward the beginning of the party and people will be chatting. It will be in indoor lighting. I've thought about this, as obviously natural light is better to shoot in, but I've come to the conclusion that the dimmer or obscured lighting will help the overall effect I am trying to achieve. I don't see why I couldn't rent out the Tascams from the Cage.

I hope to give someone the feel of being in an actual party, a realistic scenario in which most college students have found themselves. At some point in the video, I am going to have someone pretend to spike a drink, and later leave the party with the drugged person. What's compelling about it is that we all hear about the national sexual assault crisis on college campuses, but rarely do we hear about the bystanders, the other people at those parties. The point of this video is to shine light on the forgotten. I believe people, especially college students, should experience this because this is a real-life scenario that occurs everywhere. The video may be in the virtual world but this problem is a reality. I don't want people to realize the purpose of the video until the end, so hopefully most of the video feels like a familiar party setting. There's an ad going around about a high school age kid at a school falling in love with a girl that starts out really cute, until there's a school shooter in the making who has been in the background the whole time undetected until the very end. I want to achieve a similar result. As for trauma, anyone who has ever been sexually assaulted could be very triggered by this video, so I may have to post a warning of some kind.

The main characters are a male and a female, who at first appear as totally normal partygoers. At some point, the antagonist (male) will spike the girl's drink when she leaves to go to the bathroom. This will not be obvious, however, as it will happen in the midst of a party. The rest of the partygoers, the accidental bystanders, will be just as important of characters. The story is trying to solve the problem of casual sexual assault, the idea that something so heinous could appear innocuous if you're not paying attention. I've thought about how to draw the viewer's attention to the action without giving away the experience, and right now I'm just going to put in the main field of focus, but in the background, and just let the action unfold. I think that this experience is important because this is such a huge problem in our culture. We talk about the results but don't discuss all of the problems. This PSA-style video will serve as a wake up call, that this is not just a problem for the victim but a problem for all of us. The experiencer can feel empathetic toward the girl, but this story doesn't have a happy ending.

The most logical place for someone to be would be in the party, so sitting and talking at the beginning, maybe dancing in the middle and walking out at the end. Based on the positioning, someone should either hold it tight to their body or set up a tripod for some of the standing shots. I was thinking of placing it in the corner of a room so that the viewer can gaze upon the party. You are a guide in the sense that you are a bystander in this as well; the idea that this could happen to you or someone you know. The positioning of us isn't that hard, as most of us can just go into another room and out of the shot. The exception to that is the person who may have to hold the rig in the middle of the party. The equipment would be safe because this party would take place in my house and I will know all of the people there so no one would steal it. There's nothing suspicious about this location as it's my house.
